Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT)

Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) is a specialised medical procedure used to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells. Bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside your bones that produces blood cells. BMT is used to treat a variety of haematological diseases, including certain cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, as well as other non-cancerous blood disorders like aplastic anaemia and sickle cell anaemia.

There are two main types of BMT:

Autologous BMT: The patient's own stem cells are collected, typically when the disease is in remission, and stored before the patient undergoes high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The stored cells are then re-infused back into the patient to replenish the bone marrow.

Allogeneic BMT: The stem cells are collected from a donor whose tissue type closely matches the patient. This can include a sibling, family member, or even an unrelated donor. Allogeneic transplants are more complex due to the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), where the donated marrow sees the patient's body as foreign and attacks it.
